To spend an afternoon, late in summer and sticky sweet, beneath loam and tangled roots, rotting into the delicate corpse of another. Ah, romance.

Inspired by the song “In A Week,” written and performed by Andrew John Hozier-Byrne (featuring vocals by Karen Cowley) from the album Hozier. Listen here.
We are made of opulence. Have a drink, and revel. But speak easy; none of us are supposed to be here.

Tried my hand at a minimalist memory of art deco glamour and ended up with this. What was at first an exercise in lines somehow evolved into this forlorn flapper drifting between jazz sets.
Evening glamour made sloppy undone by bruise’d mem’ry of lips and tongue.

Haha, been there.

Despite the time that has passed since I first put this look together it remains one of my favorites I’ve done. I love the way these exaggerated features manipulate focus. I love the interaction of the bold and loud, and all the quiet in between.
The done-up "undone" "cool girl"—an object of envy who wants for nothing and cares for just as much: unobtainable; a manic pixie dream falling apart.

I wanted to put together something aspirationally "undone"—I drew from the hyper-perfect Glossier girl but rolled it up with a modern take on the heroin-chic look that was romanticized in the 90s. (I'd like to make blatantly clear: this look was intended as critique of this "ideal." I in no way support cigarette smoking.) (I'd also like to make clear that the discoloration and veining on the eyes is makeup. I am not translucent enough for mine to be this predominant.)
